On location a whole year later, fondly remembering On location a whole year later, fondly remembering the adventures we had in the making of the video, "Thin Ice". A similarly windy and cold day to the many we experienced during the filming. This 6.4 km ice road leads from Yellowknife to the Yellowknives Dene settlement, Dettah, and is open to traffic from early January to late April. Ice roads are essential in the North for transportation of people and goods to places that are either inaccessible or more difficult to get to by road when the ice is gone. There are many ice roads that branch off of this one and extend for many kilometres, used recreationally and as access points for fishing and hunting. My family personally loves the ice roads best in the spring just before the ice gets too thin, for spectacular ice skating and skate skiing conditions!
