The video for Thin Ice was filmed on the ice road to Dettah on Yellowknife Bay, Northwest Territories, Canada.
The song was inspired by the importance of ice in the north. We spend a lot of time in the winter months travelling across the lake, first by foot, then by snow machine and then eventually by cars and trucks. The title, Thin Ice, acknowledges the mystery of the ice conditions. We always need to know how thick the ice is so we know how much weight it can support.
The video was filmed in late April 2021, and that’s generally when the ice conditions are getting a little bit sketchy because the thickness of the ice is diminishing. By May, we no longer drive. We move to snow machines and eventually we walk.
This video celebrates the joy that this ice playground brings to our community. Playing pond hockey. Playing on our famous snow castle. And there’s even some footage of a canoe traversing across the lake which is something that we do when we’re worried about the ice conditions underneath.
The funny thing is, when we filmed the video for Thin Ice, it was an uncanny cold snap of minus 20 degrees Celsius temperatures or colder. So the ice wasn’t thin at all. As a matter of fact there was more than six feet of ice at the time.
